Smiley faces and beans, a caff and a cuppa, AJ Tracey and Jorja Smith, ‘Crush’ is quintessentially British through and through, especially the music video.
The West-London heavyweight has teamed up with Walsall’s favourite again to make one of the biggest songs of the year so far.
Tracey and Smith may be the only featured credits on the song but neither of their voices start the record, instead a sped up version of Brandy’s ‘Love Wouldn’t Count Me Out’ chorus rings out and continues to play an integral part of the instrumental’s trap loops and beats.
AJ is always keeping listeners on their toes with his flow, “Let's hold hands on the block 'cause it's safe there / We can smoke blunts in a Knightsbridge penthouse / Bet you thought I was gonna say Mayfair”.
This isn’t the first time he's caught us out either. In 2017’s ‘Blacked Out’ he points out “Trust me, I'm never going out whack / My Spanish miss said I'm gonna fail 'cause I'm brown / Bet you thought I was gonna say black.”
Smith puts aside her masterclass vocals for a talk-style verse with standout lines like “You just wanna love me for / I don't wanna take it all” and “I like that, when you say you're gonna hold me down / Fight back, if you don't surf, I'll drown.”
But, it wouldn’t be a Jorja song without some of those swooning melodies. Don’t fret, there’s lots of opportunities to hear her addictive tones as she backs up Tracey after every flow, “I listened when you told me / I cannot be sorry, boy, l've tried.”
And if that wasn’t enough, she reminds you of her impressive airy vocals with the outro “You are the reason I don't mind / You are the reason I'm blind / But you love me so right”.
Having worked together back in 2019 on the worldwide acclaimed ‘Ladbroke Grove’, the pair may be looking to recreate the same success, and if the online reaction to ‘Crush’ so far is anything to go off, they’ve easily secured another hit.
Round of applause for Tracey’s spectacular one-liner, “We can watch anime while I put a bite on your asscheek”, bravo.
