BRITISH PUNK BAND KID KAPICHI AT GIBSON GARAGE WITH MERC CLOTHING - A SPECIAL NIGHT OF FASHION AND ROCK'N'ROLL

Back at the Gibson Garage a year on from their last performance here, Kid Kapichi returned to the stage, opening with a blazing rendition of ‘Artillery’.

Clearly here to get the crowd rocking, lead singer Jack Wilson wasted no time gently setting his new guitar aside and immediately launching into a bouncing ‘LGTW’. The fact he can be heard over the passion with which his fellow bandmates play their instruments is a testament to his vocal strength.

Before coming to the stage, face towels were left at each band member’s mic (and drum kit); we are only three songs in when they are first used. The energy exuding from the stage is flammable. It is clear the band live for performing. Even when Wilson isn’t leading the band with his establishment-challenging lyrics, the way in which bassist Eddie Lewis, and guitarist Ben Beetham navigate the stage, and their instruments, is a performance in itself.

The stage production is simple: purple and yellow lights that are kept steady throughout the entire performance. The real show is unfolding before us. “Who’s working tomorrow?” asks Wilson, to which he is met with a mixed reception of groans and whistles. ‘5 Days on (2 Days Off)’ then rings out from the stage, and this acknowledgement of the 9-5 plight seems to quell the Monday Blues as the crowd starts to headbang and move as one.

Taking a moment to speak with the audience, Wilson shares the story of how all he ever wanted as a child was a guitar yet could never afford one. Tonight, he stands on stage in a room lined with guitars on either side of the stage and shows us the brand-new Gibson guitar he has been gifted with. Though his eyes remain covered with trademark black sunglasses, his gratitude is sincere and evident as he picks up his guitar once more and launches into the high-octane, ‘Can EU Hear Me?

Not that he hadn’t already, but drummer George MacDonald truly showed off his talent as he helped the band close out with a crashing ‘Smash the gaff’.  Not one track dipped in energy as the band delivered high-powered performances of each of their songs. Perhaps they should consider recording some down-tempo songs. Ending on such a high left me wanting more.
