Bring on the bounce, Haitian-Canadian rapper Lou Phelps is thundering into this new album rollout with his new single titled ‘WHAT NOW’. With his highly anticipated sophomore album CHÈLBE due to be released April 7th, this is a sharp groove-laden first offering that is a throttling push onto the sweaty dance floor.
Produced by Grammy award-winning producer Kaytranada, (His brother, so you know the rhythm runs in the family.), the track is both aggressive and sultry. Lou Phelps absolutely glides over these cascading drums with a dominating presence to his delivery. There’s this primal essence to the way he unloads these bars, not many MCs could jump on a beat like this and soar, let alone get away with it.
It matches his frustrations with the current rap scene. “Rap is predictable and wack as fuck in my opinion - I’m creating a new sound with Rap-House. It’s something that can exist in the club, in the crib, or while working out in the gym”. There’s a classic 90’s hip hop swagger to the track, but sonically modern and fresh. He’s an artist that spits with absolute intent, over any beat that he fancies.
Starting out in a group with his brother called The Celestics, he began to carve his own name in the music scene with 2018’s 002/Love me. He continued to shine with various releases including last years fantastic Top Z EP, which featured ‘Tu T’en Souviens', a hit in its own right with his fantastic COLORSXSTUDIOS performance of it. While sprinkling his audacious bars on ‘Call U Up’ a track from his brothers latest album Timeless, CHÈLBE is the sophomore album from Phelps, also produced by Kaytranada. It promises to be a cultural and diverse mix of dance, rap and house. He’s also set to join his brother on the Timeless European tour in April, which is set to be one of the biggest dance tours of the year.
