Rachel Chinouriri & Cat Burns Team Up for 'Even,' A Soulful Anthem on Identity and Belonging
Rachel Chinouriri is back, and this time, she's brought along her longtime friend and fellow BRIT School graduate Cat Burns for her latest single, "Even." This track, a beautifully crafted collaboration, goes beyond just music - it’s a conversation about the shared experiences of young Black women trying to find their place in a world that often feels unwelcoming.
“Even” is Chinouriri’s first release since her debut album What A Devastating Turn Of Events, which dropped in May and quickly became a fan favourite. This new single sees her exploring deeper, more personal themes, capturing the emotional weight of what it feels like to constantly work harder just to be seen. Chinouriri doesn’t shy away from the realities Black and POC individuals face, tackling how it feels to be treated like a stranger in your own home.
"No matter how much we try to fit in," Chinouriri reflects, "it often feels like we're playing catch-up, and the finish line keeps moving."
Cat Burns, known for her raw, emotive vocals, felt an immediate connection to the song.
“I was so honoured when Rachel asked me to be part of this project. We’ve always been there for each other, from our BRIT School days to now. The message behind 'Even' hit home for me, and I hope people listen and understand the layers of our experiences.”
The song itself is a testament to both artists' growth, effortlessly blending their voices into a rich, soulful sound. It’s the kind of track that gets under your skin, not just because of its smooth melodies, but because of its authenticity. It doesn’t sugarcoat the struggles of identity, instead pushing listeners to confront uncomfortable truths.
This release isn’t just a one-off, either. With Chinouriri embarking on a sold-out UK headline tour this November - including a hometown show at London’s Kentish Town Forum - “Even” feels like the perfect anthem to kick off the next phase of her journey. And with the chemistry between her and Burns, it wouldn’t be surprising if this collaboration becomes a fan favourite on tour.
At its core, "Even" is a song that’s not just about music, but about understanding and representation. It’s a reminder that there’s still a long way to go, but with artists like Rachel Chinouriri and Cat Burns leading the charge, we’re moving in the right direction.
