Supreme pay homage to the iconic rapper MF DOOM in its latest Fall 2023 collaboration, featuring apparel adorned with MF DOOM motifs and a handwritten note.
New York streetwear brand Supreme has officially revealed its highly-anticipated collaboration with the estate of the legendary rapper MF DOOM for its Fall 2023 collection serving as a tribute to the iconic British-American rapper and his influential contributions to hip-hop culture.
Born in 1971 as Daniel Dumile, MF DOOM rose to prominence in the world of hip-hop with his unique style and enigmatic persona. His early career included the formation of the graffiti crew KMD (A Positive Kause in a Much Damaged Society), which later evolved into a rap trio. With his debut release, "Mr. Hood" (1991), as part of KMD, Dumile received critical acclaim.
Tragically, in 1993, during work on KMD's second album, "Black Bastards," Dumile's younger brother, Dingilizwe, was killed, leading to the project being shelved and Dumile disappearing from public life. He would later re-emerge in the Nuyorican Poets' Cafe in Manhattan's Lower East Side, performing unannounced with a stocking covering his face. This disguise would evolve into the iconic metal mask that became synonymous with MF DOOM.
In 1997, Dumile released "Dead Bent," his first single as MF DOOM, adopting the name as a homage to the Marvel villain Doctor Victor von Doom and the pronunciation of his family's last name. His debut solo album, "Operation: Doomsday" (1999), marked the beginning of an illustrious career in which he released a series of albums under various pseudonyms.
One of MF DOOM's most celebrated works is his 2004 collaboration with Madlib, "Madvillainy," which is considered one of the most highly anticipated releases in underground hip-hop history, thanks to MF DOOM's enigmatic lyricism.
On October 31, 2020, MF DOOM passed away due to angioedema, caused by an allergic reaction to a medication prescribed for blood pressure. His expansive body of work and enigmatic personality have solidified his influence and legacy in the world of hip-hop.
In this latest collaboration, Supreme worked closely with the estate of MF DOOM to create a special collection. The range includes a Hooded Sweatshirt, T-shirt, and Beanie, all adorned with imagery associated with the MF DOOM persona, his hand style motif, and a handwritten note.
The MF DOOM x Supreme Fall 2023 collaboration will be released on September 7th worldwide, available at all Supreme stores and online at 4 PM GMT.
