South London’s rising star Tara Lily teams up with electronic producer and rapper Surya Sen to bring a new dimension to Like The Ocean, an evocative track from her debut album Speak In The Dark.
This collaboration is not only a celebration of British-Bengali heritage but also a meeting of minds, as Sen’s verse in Bengali deepens the track’s poetic essence, conjuring imagery of timeless ocean waves. For Tara, the track is “a Neptunian ode to the mysteries of the sea,” connecting listeners to her signature themes of secrets, desire, and ancestral ties.
For Tara, this album is a deeply personal reflection of her emotional journey through life with ADHD. Often recording late at night during improvised jam sessions, she channels her emotional highs and lows into her work. Drawing inspiration from her travels through Asia, Speak In The Dark is infused with her reconnection to her Indian cultural heritage, which she explores alongside Dom Valentino’s production and contributions from a stellar lineup of musicians like saxophonist Jazz Lee, Akash Parekah, and Archy Marshall. Reflecting on her journey, Tara shares,
“I was diagnosed with ADHD at 15 when I was expelled from school. I often feel like every day is an emotional rollercoaster. This album represents that - a mix of intense energy and slow, mournful ballads.”
As she continues her path of musical exploration, Tara stands out as a powerful voice for young, multicultural artists in Britain, showcasing a distinct sound that celebrates her roots while inspiring a path forward.
With Like The Ocean and the rest of Speak In The Dark, Tara Lily reminds us that the musician’s journey often involves twists and turns - and it’s in the journey itself that artists find the hidden treasures shaping their sound. Tara’s story is one of self-discovery, resilience, and an unyielding commitment to authentic, boundary-pushing artistry.
