The Irish rap-star has experienced widespread acclaim thus far, particularly in his native Ireland, but this new era feels as though he’s found his sound, and is beginning to reap the rewards of his hard work.
On ‘Spooky’, Travy switches up from previous work, opting for a fresher sound that merges Irish rap with grime energy and trap sensibility. This development suits him to a tee, with his impactful flows and subtle accent blending with the instrumentals to great effect. In combination with his shift in sound, he’s shifted his image, donning black fits with shining diamonds to match his ‘Spooky’ project cover. This aligning of image, sound and attitude is seriously working for him, as through this body of work he’s delivered many of his finest songs to date.
Beginning with a prayer from his mother titled ‘Iya Mi’, ‘Spooky’ quickly delves into soaring production on ‘Meet Spooky’, with Travy landing on 808s with conviction. ‘Eurostar’ seems him link up with Yvnnis and Reggie, doing wonders for Irish-French relations as they each take turns to slide on the instrumental courtesy of Liam Harris. The aforementioned producer really deserves his flowers. Producing every track on the album, Liam Harris has allowed Travy to unlock his potential. This is proving to be a lethal producer-artist combination, which is likely to result in many more triumphs.
‘Me & Her’ is one of the best on the tape, an example of everything coming together to reach something special. Exploring the UK Jersey Club sub-genre, alongside US collaborator zipbby!+*, Travy tastefully interpolates Ice Spice with fantastic results. ‘Forgive Me’ is a highlight of the B-side, as Travy shows hints of a deeper emotional depth to his work. This is something he will undoubtedly explore more in the future, and when he does it will likely prove hugely captivating.
When it comes to Dublin, Travy really is that guy right now. He's flying the flag for his generation, placing himself front and centre in the conversation of one of the most exciting music scenes anywhere in the world at this moment. The emerald isle is shining bright, and Travy is a pivotal figure in helping it sparkle. Joined by his collective Gliders, Travy is pushing boundaries, and using his skilled musicianship to lay a blueprint for those around him.
After attending the 'Spooky' listening party earlier in the week, and seeing the stagecraft of this young performer, it seems there is no weaknesses to this players' game. With 'Spooky', Travy has moved up a gear, aligning his sound, style, image and community together as one. This is a hugely exciting entry to the rap scene in 2025, and we will be keeping a close eye on how his year progresses.
